Hughesville, Lycoming County-
A celebration of Pennsylvania's heritage is underway this week. The Lycoming County Fair is a summertime tradition that goes back generations.
For 138 years, they've been coming to see the myriad of attractions here. The fair began as a venue for farmers to display their livestock and produce.
And for many, the animals and the food are still the big draws at this summertime tradition. Maureen Wildt, of Bloomsburg, explained, "I wanted to come up today to bring my granddaughters up, because they like looking at the animals."
And there are plenty to see. Animals of all shapes and sizes take up residence here for the week.
But it's never a true trip to the fair without going on the rides and trying some of the fantastic food being whipped up all over the fairgrounds. Dale Schooley, of Danville, noted, "We sell anything from hot dogs, hamburgers, hamburger barbecue, bean soup, and everything that we have is superior."
Schooley volunteered to grill up great meals all week at the Turbotville Lions Club stand. All the money they raise goes to kids here in the area. Schooley said, "It's something that makes you feel good. Even though you don't gain monetarily, somebody else will gain from your effort."
And Schooley says, if nothing else, coming to the fair is a good chance to meet up with some old friends. "It gives the opportunity for people to meet people that they only see once a year and I think a lot of people come out for the fellowship."
The Lycoming County Fair runs through Saturday.
