143rd Annual Memorial Day Service in Scranton

143rd Annual Memorial Day Service in Scranton - Monday, May 25, 2009 at 6:00PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- The City of Scranton hosted its 143rd annual Memorial Day service. This long-standing event brought out a patriotic crowd.
A good crowd gathers at Scranton's Nay Aug Park. They're here to pay an annual Memorial Day tribute and hear words of inspiration. "We must continue together on this special day each year to pay honor to these American heroes," says one speaker.

VFW Post 25 and the City of Scranton team up to sponsor this service. John Marullo, Commander of VFW Post 25, said, "It's a great day. I mean it's a day to remember our lost ones and what people do for this country."

The military is also part of this crowd from current troops to veterans. Also here -- some too young to fully understand why this day is so important.

Lieutennant Colonel Dale Pepper reflects on the invasion of Normandy in World War II. He speaks of brave troops who fought for our freedoms -- and never wants anyone to forget. "Remember all of our men and women who served in our armed forces over the years to realize their sacrifice, you know, and I think it needs to be continued especially for the younger generations these days," said Pepper.

Susie Hudock of Wilkes-Barre said, "Young children don't realize what they gave us -- our freedom."

Hudock and her husband have attended this service for more than a decade and believes more should do the same. "And I think before we start our picnics and that, it would be nice to come out in the morning and honor our veterans," she added.

Veterans organizations present wreaths to remember fallen comrades, hoping everyone remembers why we celebrate this holiday each year.

Beside military veterans, Scranton's Memorial Day program at Nay Aug Park also honored city police and firefighters who died in the line of duty.
