155th Annual Bloomburg Fair Opens - Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 6:25PM EST

BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY -- SaturdayÕs rain probably comes as no surprise to organizers of the Bloomsburg Fair. That's because it always seems to rain on fair week.

But for most of this opening day it was just cloudy and cool and that didn't seem to bother anyone.

The crowds came early as the annual Bloomsburg Fair kicked off Saturday morning in Columbia County. Right from the get-go there was heavy foot traffic.

Heather Dawson grew up in Berwick but now lives in Bellefonte. She always makes the trip for one reason. ÒProbably the food. Not so much the crowd, but the food and animals. When you grow up with it, you always want to come back," she said.

LetÕs talk about the food. You can get anything. One of the most popular things, the blooming onion. Jolene Folk of Folk's Blooming Onion Stand said, ÒBusiness has been very brisk today. We have some half-decent weather, so people are out and they're buying food."

People also buy a lot of crafts every year at the fair. Gary Hilfiger comes all the way from Bradford County and usually sells out by Tuesday. ÒA lot of these vendors we see in other travels around the state and everything and in New York State, so we've become friends and everything," he said.

Whatever you want you can usually find it at the fair, and everyone knows that. Jeff Green of Sunbury said, ÒIt rocks. ItÕs huge man. There's no other fair like this one."

Tommy Pryor from Maryland agrees. He comes every year from Baltimore with his family for the fun. ÒItÕs three times bigger than our Maryland-State Fair. We love to walk around. The weatherÕs always nice up here. We love just seeing things and checking out the food," he said.

Of course count on WBRE Eyewitness News for continuing coverage of the Bloomsburg Fair all week. We especially hope you'll join us Tuesday when our entire evening newscasts will be live from Bloomsburg as we explore what's interesting and unique about the fair.
