24 Jobs Expected to be Cut From Luzerne Co. Sheriff's Department
24 Jobs Expected to be Cut From Luzerne Co. Sheriff's Department - Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 6:27PM EST
WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- The Luzerne County Sheriff's office would be hard hit by layoffs. 24 employees are expected to lose their jobs.
The sheriff and deputies handle inmate transports and serve warrants. They also help keep the courthouse and other county properties safe.
The sheriff says the cutbacks are too much. Sheriff Michael Savokinas says, "24 is a huge number especially when you are transporting 450 to 500 inmates a month. It’s a huge number and quite frankly I think its going to cripple the court system as well as our office."
The sheriff says he understands the budget needs, but he's concerned about courthouse safety. | |
