VANDLING, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- A burnt out shell is all that's left of an empty home in the 400-block of Main Street in Vandling. State police say someone set fire to the building just before 2:00 A. M.

Jim McAndrew, said, “You could see the flames. You could see the yellow glow. I thought, uh oh."

McAndrew lives right next door. He used a garden hose to wet down his building to keep it safe. Knowing the fire was no accident has him and his neighbors concerned. “They're very, very concerned. I mean, I'm not the type that gets scared, but I'm very concerned. I got a little grandson here, my daughter, you know, you're afraid to close your eyes at night."

Steve Giacobbe lives just a few doors down. He says it’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt in this small, sleepy community. “Doors are left open around here. You can ask anybody. We lock our doors and windows now. We have too," he said.

Monday's fire is the second to hit Vandling in less than a week. Last Tuesday the fire company's pavilion was torched and burnt to the ground. Vandling Fire Chief Mark Hollis said, “We're not sure if they're both connected at this time. That's definitely under investigation.”

Hollis understands people's concerns. “They're a little upset and they have a right to be honestly, ah. But I have faith in the police department. Both the local and state police. They're on top of it already," he said.
