61 Workers to be Laid Off from Scranton Hospital - Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 6:18PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - Late Tuesday afternoon we learned that a total of 61 workers will be laid off this week from Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton. It is the hospitals first layoffs in 17 years.

Officials from Moses Taylor have spent the last two days informing staff members about the job cuts.

Greg Popil of West Scranton believes he's one of the people who will be affected.

"It is kind of, to me, kind of surprising, given the fact that we were told the hospital was doing well for the last couple of years, so to go from that to massive layoffs all of a sudden, that certainly comes as a surprise," Popil said.

Popil was told to attend a meeting with the Human Resources Department at 2:30 PM Wednesday afternoon. He's already started saying goodbye to co-workers and packing up his things. For the last three and a-half years, he's worked at the hospital as an orderly.

"From what I've heard, it's not just the low-level guys like me, some pretty high-upranking employees -- I'm not gonna name names -- but some pretty high-ranking employees got it too," Popil said.

Moses Taylor is one of the three main hospitals in Scranton. Over the past few years, there have been merger discussions with Scranton CMC but nothing ever materialized.

Patients say the layoffs are the talk of the hospital.

"They're all concerned," Holly Thomas of Moscow said. "You can hear them talking about it. They're concerned about it, that's for sure. I would be too if I worked here."

Anthony Cutro and his wife just had a baby at the hospital. He was shocked to hear that layoffs are taking place.

"We just had a baby. The staffing here is great now and they're busy as it is with the amount of people they're serving now," Cutro said.

And serving is what Greg Popil and his fellow workers say they loved to do.

"Some people have been here for decades that I heard got cut and that really upsets me to be frank with you. That's really sad," Popil said.

Last October, Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton just got a new president and CEO.
