Summer fairs help make summer fun! And that'll be the case for those who head to the Montour-Delong Fair this week, where 71 years of tradition-in-the-making are on display in Washingtonville.

That has people coming from near and far to check it out. Some of the fair’s biggest attractions are the livestock displays.

Mary Ellen Eilers, of Milton, said, “I just think it’s great to see the kids with their families, with the animals they’ve raised.”

Mark Kitchen, of Danville, says his favorite part is showing the animals, like cows and steer, that he’s helped care for.

Kitchen noted, “You can make some money and get ribbons and it’s just really fun to do.”

Plenty of hard work goes into raising the livestock. Kitchen explained, “You have to feed them, walk them, and you always have to make sure they live in a clean environment.”

If animals aren’t your thing there are plenty of arts and crafts, games, and rides to give you a thrill.

For many fair fans, food is the big draw. And they’ve got plenty of it here- from fire grilled chicken dinners to delicious deserts.

We caught up with Frank Cotner and crew as they were roasting 600 chicken halves for the Wednesday night dinner. We’re told the chicken is amazing, but good luck getting Frank to give away the secret recipe.

Cotner said, “We use a little vinegar and water and a few other spices that I put with it. And it seems that everybody in the area really likes it.”

We found Mary Ellen Eilers grabbing some butter pecan and black raspberry ice cream. She says fairs like this are impossible to pass up. “Well, I love food, I love animals, and obviously I love to eat," she laughed.

The Montour-Delong Fair runs through Saturday in Washingtonville.
