ASHLAND, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY -- Fire crews had to act fast to save a city block from burning in Ashland, Schuylkill County.

It happened on the 1300 hundred block of Centre Street. That's the main street through town. Eyewitness News was the first TV crew on the scene as the fire burned for nearly three hours.

While dozens of fire fighters tried to save an the city block from turning to ashes, Monique Snyder hoped the flames don't spread to her home. Snyder said, "Our home is all stone, so hopefully. I don't know, I'm just so scared."

Scared that this fire which started at about 10:30 Wednesday would just keep going. Eight buildings, including the Drunken Monkey Bar and Grill were either burned or took on water damage.

Firefighters sprayed, sawed and busted out windows to keep it under control. Two men, Robert O'Donnel Senior and Junior, were hurt. Fire crews think the fire started in their home but aren't sure why.

Hundreds, including Joe Misunas, lined Centre Street to watch. "It's real bad. I mean it started out as a small fire and ended up past six houses. It just got away on them," said Misunas.

Some wonder how the fire didn't spread even farther. Lorie Ossman of Butler Township said, "You can go from one house to the next in these old row homes. It's very scary. There's always fear of fire in these small towns."

When the smoke cleared Snyder's home took on some water damage but was okay. Several pets made it out of these buildings including dogs and cats.

Robert O'Donnell Junior was treated and released from St. Catherine Hospital in Butler Township. The Ashland Fire Department said O'Donnel Senior was taken to the Lehigh Valley hospital, but his condition was not available.
