KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY- Old Glory has been raised in battlefields around the world. Wednesday, a soldier brought back the stars and stripes from Afghanistan for a special presentation at his alma mater. It was raised above the United Hebrew Institute in Kingston .

It's been to war zone in Afghanistan and back. “The flag flew for two days uncontested and we took it down and brought it back," says Captain Josh Knobel who brought the flag back from his base in Afghanistan where it flew high last Thanksgiving.

Knobel is a United Hebrew Institute graduate, and Wednesday, he presented the flag to the school. Knobel says, "It's humbling for a place where you grew up and learned the lessons that you learned, sort of learn how to be a person. For them to be giving you and atta-boy and thanking you for coming to see them."

The idea for the flag presentation came from the Jewish War Veterans of the U. S.A. It flew over the U. S. Capitol before heading to Captain Knobel.

One vet is happy to see it flying here. Samuel Greenburg of the Jewish War Veterans of America says, "At times I could probably cry especially when I look at a young man like this. This is what it's all about. To show our children how wonderful freedom is."

Students were happy to listen to that lesson. United Hebrew Institute student Joshua Greenberg says, "I enjoyed listening to how all of this affected him and this is where we could be later on in life."

Former teachers have been waiting for this day. Knobel's former teacher Sophie Pernikoff says, "In our class we said prayers for him every single day because I was trying to make sure that the lord watches over him like watching all the American soldiers. But he was so special to us."

And now this special flag will fly for all to see. Captain Knobel just finished his army service last month. In a few weeks, he's heading to a seminary school in Israel , where he'll learn to become a rabbi.
