Abandoned Monroe County Pets Have No Where to Go

Abandoned Monroe County Pets Have No Where to Go - Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 3:34PM EST

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - There's more trouble for abandoned pets in the Poconos. This winter, the SPCA shut down Monroe County's only animal shelter. Many animals had to go to foster homes until they found permanent homes. But there are no more foster families left.

Dogs DD and Buddy got lucky. They won't have to roam the streets because they found a foster family. They'll live with Lisa and Ron Thomas until they find forever families. Ron said, "I think it's a rewarding experience."

Ron and Lisa were Camp Papillon's last available foster family. Heather Stephens helps run the organization. She said, "We cannot help anymore animals, we don't have anymore foster homes."

LIsa added, "There's gonna be a lot more stray dogs running the streets and a lot more dogs being just neglected."

So Camp Papillon wants more people to sign up and open their homes to pets in need. Ron said, "There's a lot more animals out there than there are good homes for them."

It cost you nothing to foster a dog through Camp Papilion the organization pays for everything from leashes and bedding to toys and food."They were very good at making sure we had everything we needed for them," said Lisa.

Right now Camp Papillon has about 100 animals in foster care. Without help there could be hundreds more lonely pets who don't end up as lucky as DD and Buddy.

Camp Papillon will hold the Sazu Paw Walk this Sunday to raise money for foster pet upkeep and hopefully someday build a shelter.

It starts at 10 Sunday morning at Zacharias pond in East Stroudsburg. You're welcome to bring your pets. The walk is named in honor of Luis Figueroa's cat. He said he organized the event because there's nothing like the love of a pet. He explained, "I love pets. I also love the fact that we could save more of these animals because they could give love to human beings as well."
