Accused Murderer Takes the Stand - Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at 6:18PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- Former Dallas Township police officer Jeffrey Dennis, who's accused of killing his wife, took the stand in his own defense at his murder trial Wednesday.

The defense only called two witnesses, Jeffrey Dennis, and his mother.

When Dennis took the stand he denied killing his wife Carli over and over again. It was emotional, and it was a crucial point in the trial of the former police officer.

Carli Dennis died from a gunshot wound to the head.

It happened at the couples home in Wyoming borough, back in February 2006.

The prosecution says Dennis shot her, because he was jealous that his wife was cheating on him.

In his testimony, Dennis cried and said Carli shot herself right in front of him.

He read cards from his wife to the jury, saying they had a great relationship and planned to work through their problems.

But prosecuting lawyers painted a different picture, saying Dennis was a controlling husband who killed his wife while she was sleeping.

Dennis' mother, Mary Ann Sutton, was the only other defense witness.
She said Dennis was crushed when Carli died. Prosecutors did not cross examine her.

The jury could be handed the case as early as Thursday.
