It's national adoption week.
On Friday a luncheon celebrated local families who took a child into their homes.
Sandra Dobson of Wilkes-Barre was at the luncheon.
Dobson has a full house: three adopted and two biological children.
She's also a foster parent for two more.
Dobson joined several parents who adopt at Temple B'nai B'rith in Kingston for a national adoption month appreciation lunch.
She calls adoption both rewarding and challenging.
"Getting the children into a home where they feel that they're loved and they belong and they're safe,” said Dobson.
She adds, “Once they come in and you treat them like they're your own, then they just fit right in. They fight right in just like the family."
Dee Dee Maureillo of Exeter Township has two adopted children, Brandon and Hope.
She talked to Eyewitness News about her best feeling as an adoptive parent.
"When you look at them and you know how happy they are, you know how much they love where they're at," said Maureillo.
Maureillo hopes more parents follow her lead and adopt as well.
“We take a chance every day in life what we're going to do. I took a chance for seven years for grant and hope to become legally adopted and it was the best seven years of my life," said Maureillo.
Luzerne County Children and Youth hopes for more parents like Dobson and Mauriello.
80 children have been adopted in Luzerne County this year. | |
