Agency Says Good Jobs are Available - Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at 3:25PM EST

Williamsport, Lycoming County-

While many businesses are laying off employees, one local company has plenty of job openings – but not enough applicants.

As a newcomer to the Williamsport area six months ago, Jeffrey Black was having trouble finding employment.

Black noted, “Basically they told me that they do their hiring through temp services.”

Eventually, Jeff got linked up with Manpower, a temp-to-hire agency in the city.

He explained, “You fill out an application with them, give them a job history of what you’ve been doing, a few references, and then they pretty much fit you to what you know.”

Manpower has been assisting with job placement here since the early ‘90’s. They’re finding work for an average of 20-25 people each week.

Employees say most job seekers don’t realize the help they can receive.

Branch manager Becky Espenshade said, “They are not aware of the resources that are out there with today’s modern technology- things that are available to them free of charge even on the Internet.”

Manpower has an entire board full of positions that prospective employers want filled.

Espenshade pointed out, “(We have) anything from entry level warehouse general labor all the way up to supervisory roles.”

Employees at Manpower say a well-polished resume is a job seekers best ally. They also warn against waiting until unemployment benefits run out to start your search.

Today, Jeffrey Black is living in Williamsport- happily employed- and gives Manpower all the credit.

Black added, “So far, Manpower’s just fitted my needs. Got me a job, got money in my pocket, so (it was) a good experience, yeah.”

Officials at Manpower believe the economy is starting to turn around. They say they’re seeing more employers looking for help.
