HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Aviation and antique car enthusiasts had fun and helped others as part of the 9th annual "Wings Full of Wishes" air show and car cruise. It raises money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation's regional office.
"We came to the Hazleton airport last year, and we raised $6,800 and that's more than we ever raised before," said Mike Losh, event organizer and member of the Wyoming Valley R. C. Flyers. "That granted wishes for two kids - one in Hazleton and one in Wilkes-Barre."
"The public has the chance to see a different kind of airplane, and I do what I can to support those programs," said Lou Paparazo from Pottsville, who flew in his experimental-built airplane.
Hundreds of people turned out for the event.
"We thought it was a good idea to come out and support the Make-a-Wish Foundation," said Bill Ditchey of Glen Lyon, whose son is a Boy Scout. "That's what Boy Scouts are for."
"It's good to help out the other kids who are sick," added Ditchey's son, Brandon.
Admission to the show was free, but Losh says donations come in a dollar at a time -- from food, raffles, and face painting.
"I think about all these diseases and the pain they go through," said 11-year-old Bailey Cunningham of Nanticoke of the Make-a-Wish children. "And the Make-a-Wish grants a wish for them, the happiness they get to enjoy, that's what i want to think of."
Organizers understand a tough economy could hurt donations, but the goal is to raise enough money to grant at least two wishes.
"This is what it's all about," added Paparazo. "People helping other people." | | |
