The FBI wants to see if his civil rights were violated. They met with state police investigators late Thursday. Cruz insists he was abused. Police say he was out of control.
Luis Cruz walked out of district court Thursday charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
Wilkes-Barre police say he was out of control when they tried to take him into custody on Tuesday morning on Stanton Street. Police got word of a man yelling and making threats that he had a gun and would shoot African Americans.
He spent 10 hours in the emergency room with injuries suffered in the police encounter. "It started violent they pulled out batons and started hitting me," he said.
Eyewitness News confirmed that the FBI was contacted by the Luzerne County District Attorney's office to look into the case. "Depending on what that investigation shows or what we learn from that investigation we'll take it from there," said D. A. Jackie Musto Carroll.
City officials say they are confident their officers did the right thing. They also say Cruz has a history of violence. They say he was out of control and would not listen to police who were telling him to stop resisting arrest. | |
