MONROE COUNTY- Even though the holidays are still weeks away, people in the Poconos are already getting in the spirit of the season. Eyewitness News was in Monroe County Saturday as operation Christmas child kicked off.

One by one shoeboxes were stuffed full of goodies at the Stroud Mall. From toys to candy to school supplies, each box will soon brighten the day of a less-fortunate child. Volunteer Jeanette Orlando says, “There are children in the world who really have nothing and this is a simple way they can inexpensively ship a box all the way around the world."

For a small donation shoppers personalized their own shoebox which will be sent to a third-world country. Despite a tough economy organizers say people are still giving. Ginny Jensen said, “We're seeing just the opposite of what we might have been hearing. People are still interested in giving, in wanting to show the love of our country around the world to other countries."

Needy kids in more than 100 countries benefit from this program which is done nationwide. More than 250 shoeboxes come from Monroe County alone. People here say it’s an easy way to get involved. Hayley Eichin said, “I thought this was a really great way to do that, because all they ask you to do is fill a box and that's pretty easy."

An easy way to brighten the day of someone who would otherwise go without. I just wish that I could be there to see them open it, but yeah, it’s great. It’s a great feeling," added Eichen.

If you want to get involved in operation Christmas child you will have another chance next weekend. Volunteers will once again be at the Stroud mall next Saturday between 10:00 A. M. and 6:00 P. M.
