BRAINTRIM TOWNSHIP, WYOMING COUNTY - The clean-up continues from a devastating fire Wednesday in Wyoming County. Flames destroyed part of the American Legion Post 510 in Black Walnut.

From the grips of the rubble came a little bit of hope for members Thursday. They were able to salvage some priceless posessions.

"We saved the ceremonial rifles that we use at funerals. The flags and even the horn. The case was all melted but the horn worked perfect so we're glad at that," American Legion Commander Larry Overfield said.

Even with that glimmer of good news, the work ahead of members is immense.

Robert Schultz is the groundskeeper for the American Legion.

"It still hurts but what are you going to do? Things do happen in life and you have got to keep going," Schultz said.

Many old-time members remember the building that burned as being the old bar and place where meetings were held.

"It brings back a lot of memories and it's something you never forget. It hangs with you forever," member John Stahl said.

Since the fire, American Legion members say they've gotten dozens of calls offering support and assistance. Some of those calls have come from as far away as central New Jersey.

A State Police Fire Marshal spent a majority of the morning on scene Thursday. Right now, he says the cause of the blaze is still undetermined but started in the basement of the building.

Members say they will move on. They're taking one step at a time. They did not have fire insurance.

"We had it and then we let it go. Times got a little hard," Overfield said.

A meeting for American Legion members is planned Thursday night. They know the building must be demolished. They hope to have the Legion's Bar, which is located in the social hall next door, reopened by Friday afternoon.
