MAHANOY CITY, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY -- You could feed a family of four for $4.30 a day. It's possible through Angel Food Ministires, a program used here at the Zion Baptist Church.
"Everyone who eats qualifies. It's for anyone who's trying to stretch their food budget right now," said Pastor Sharon Mullin. "But we do accept food stamps as well."
People can order $60 to $70 worth of groceries -- including meat, produce, and dairy -- for just $30. You can also order smaller specials, allergen-free food, and what the program calls "Senior and Convenience Meals."
"That gives pre-packaged, portion controlled meals, complete with a meat, starch, vegetable, and dessert," said Mullin. "And that's for just $2.80 a day ."
Pastor Mullin says the church started the program in February, with 33 orders. That number reached 115 this month. She hopes more people will order through Angel Food Ministries.
"We try to uplift their spirits and let them know we're all in this together," said Mullin. "We're all suffering from the effects of the economy, but together, we'll make it through to the end."
There are churches throughout our region that provide the Angel Food Ministry program. You can go to the program's web site and search by zip code.
The Zion Baptist Church is taking orders in person on Friday December 4th from 4-8pm and Saturday December 5th from 10am-12pm at its Market Street location. You can call them at 773-3877.
The food will be delivered December 12th. There are order forms outside the church. You can also order online by pasting the following link in your web browser: http://www. angelfoodministry. com/ | |
