POCONO TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY - It appears animals are haunting a business in the Poconos. A family says furry poltergeists have been lurking around the business for years.

Ghost hunters found paranormal activity inside a candle shop, the Candle Shoppe of the Poconos. Owner Jim Schlier said, "We always knew there was something here."

He told Eyewitness news the place isn't haunted by your typical spook, he said the place is haunted by monkeys. He explained, "A lot of the things that happened here were severe to animals."

The shop on Route 611 was built in 1897. A doctor lived there and performed animal experiments in the basement. He called it Pocono Biological. The company eventually became Sanofi Pasteur.

The doctor kept the monkeys confined to a cage. Schlier said, "I believe they were just murdered. They were murdered and dissected to see what the effects of the vaccinations were on them."

He also said he's felt the haunting. When he goes into the attic the hair on his neck stands up. He said, "There was almost something pushing me back down."

His employee Justine Osborn said she's heard the monkey spirits. She said, "You'll hear footsteps - like somebody is walking and nobody is up there. It's just very creepy."

Jim's wife, the business co owner, once got so scared she ran outside. It happened when she put monkey candle holders on a mantle. He said, "There was a big swirling around her and she wouldn't come back in the building."

Now they're turning their spooky experiences into profit. Animal Planet will feature the Candle Shoppe on a new show this weekend. "The Haunted" debuts Sunday at ten.
