Annual Bike Race Helps Sick Kids - Sunday, April 18, 2010 at 04:05AM EST

DANVILLE, MONTOUR COUNTY -- Mountain bikers covered some serious ground Sunday to help seriously ill and injured children.

Hundreds of people pedaled in the 8th Annual Tour de Tykes mountain bike races at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Bikers as young as under ten to some older than 60 took part. Beginners biked 6 and a half miles, sport-level riders pedaled 13-miles and elite and expert riders covered a 19-mile course.

Top finishers received cash prizes but the real winner is Janet Weis Children's Hospitals Pediatric Services through Children's Miracle Network at Geisinger.

It's what motivated many of the mountain bikers to participate. Stephanie Magorry of Chester County said, "It's a good thing 'cause you know the kids are sick and they can't come out and do this so it's good to raise money for them knowing that they can't come out and do it and we can. We can help them. So, yeah, it's a good feeling."

Dustin Fox of Dauphin County said, "It's like a win-win for me. I'm biking enjoying myself doing what I love and it's helping someone else out at the same time."

Chairman of Pediatrics Dr. Michael Ryan said, "Everything stays local to help the children involved in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania."

And a reminder, our sister station -- WYOU -- will host Geisinger's annual Children's Miracle Network celebration. We invite you to tune in June 5th and 6th and help if you can.
