Arrest Made in Weekend Stabbing Death

Arrest Made in Weekend Stabbing Death - Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 5:55PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- It was Shannon Chamberlain's friends who helped police arrest her in the stabbing death of 42-year-old Sandra White. They tell investigators the two were arguing over White's missing access card used for Medicaid and got into a fight at 240 N. Main St. Saturday night.
"Now we're seeing violence which has escalated to the point where people are just killing each other over sometimes nonsense," said Luzerne County District Attorney, Jackie Musto Carroll.

The suspect's friends tell police Chamberlain kept saying, "I stabbed her," later on Saturday night. They arrested her Sunday on unrelated criminal warrants and said she appeared to have dried blood stains on her pants.

Randi Groshek lives in Nanticoke but comes through this part of Main St. at least three times a week.

"I don't feel safe around here, not with all the stabbings and shootings around here," said Groshek.

The district attorney's office has been very busy lately. They have 24 open cases of criminal homicide.

"The fact that we do have 24 open cases does not mean we can stop working on whatever comes in," added Carroll. "All of us are up throughout the night when there's a homicide. There hasn't been restful sleep for a long time."

She's glad the suspect in this case is in custody, but she hopes people start talking out their problems and walking away.

"The homicides that have occurred are senseless," said Carroll. "There's no question, they're senseless."
