WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY- A brawl broke out in the cafeteria of Williamsport Area High School late this morning. That sent dozens of cops and concerned parents to the school. A number of students have been arrested.
The school district confirmed shortly after 9:00 A. M. that an altercation involving a small number of students occurred in the school's bus loop early this morning. Then around 12:30 P. M. the school confirmed that several additional altercations occurred, resulting in the suspension of several students.
However police tell Eyewitness News they responded to a brawl in the school's cafeteria just before noon. Dozens of police officers arrived at the school to take control of the situation. They won't say how many students were involved, but they did take a number of students from the school in handcuffs.
Students were kept in lockdown for a time, then were allowed to return to their classrooms. Some students placed cell phone calls and text messages to parents saying they were scared and concerned for their safety. However school officials and police say there were no weapons involved and nobody was injured.
The situation sent a large number of concerned parents to the school. But those parents and our news crews were being kept away from the high school for almost an hour.
As of 12:35 school officials have lifted the lockdown and were working with police to "restore order" with the large contingent of parents that had congregated outside the school. Parents are now being allowed to take their children home early with proper ID. The school day will end at the regularly scheduled time.
