TUNKHANNOCK, WYOMING COUNTY- A century-old building damaged by an arsonist last year was demolished in Tunkhannock on Tuesday.

The Masonic Building on Tioga Street was constructed around 1876. It had most recently been used as both a meeting hall and a restaurant.

The building was heavily damaged by fire last year. One Monday, 27-year-old Richard Meyers Jr. of Tunkhannock entered a guilty plea to arson charges stemming from that fire.

Mayor Norm Ball said the community was sorry to lose part of its history. But Mayor Ball said that loss will actually benefit the community in the long run. Community Bank is buying the property which it will use to expand its parking and create a small park. Mayor Ball said the bank will share the parking facility with other downtown businesses such as the nearby Dietrich Theater.
