Hughesville, Lycoming County-
An elementary school in the East Lycoming School District garnered high praise Thursday morning for its energy-efficient status. Environmental officials say Ashkar Elementary School easily makes the Energy Star grade.
Judith Katz, an official with the Environmental Protection Agency, explained, “The Energy Star building label is awarded to buildings that score in the top 25% nationally.”
Ashkar is the first school in Lycoming County, and one of only 11 across the state, to earn the distinction.
Superintendent Dr. Susan l. Bigger said, “I think we take a significant effort and are very future-minded when it comes to looking at ways to save resources, save money for our taxpayers.”
We’re told Ashkar passes the grade based on its use of effective lighting, heating, and air-conditioning systems.
Environmental officials point to the nearly 40-year-old Ashkar Elementary School as proof that older buildings can be retro-fitted to achieve greater energy efficiency.
Administrators hope the school’s status will set a good example for kids and families in the community.
They also hope taxpayers will appreciate the savings they anticipate in the future.
Katz noted, “By increasing energy efficiency, not only can you help the environment, but you can save money.”
Bigger added, “Energy costs for a district are substantial and significant. So although Ashkar’s getting awarded today, we have energy-related projects going on at all of our buildings.”
Energy Star buildings typically use 40 percent less energy and emit 35 percent less carbon dioxide than average buildings. | | |
