HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY- Fire broke out just after midnight Wednesday morning, & the initial scene was described as chaotic. The Hazleton Fire Department tells us that one person even jumped from a 2nd floor window to escape the flames. The fire broke out at 120 / 22 W Broad Street near the intersection with Route 309 Hazleton. Nearly 40 firefighters responded to attack the 2 alarm fire. The building houses businesses on the 1st floor, & several apartments on the 2nd floor. The fire started on the 2nd floor near the rear of the building. That part of the building was badly damaged. The 1st floor suffered primarily smoke damage. We're told that all 4 fire victims were alert before being taken to Hazleton General. The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes. The Red Cross came to the scene to help out those put out of a home by the fire, & the State Police Fire Marshall is now investigating the cause of the Hazleton blaze. | |
