Clinton Township, Lycoming County-
It is enough to send chills down the spine of any parent. A man tries to lure a child into a car. That is exactly what happened in one part of Lycoming County. Now police are warning parents.
State police at Montoursville say a middle-aged man attempted to lure a nine-year-old girl into his pickup truck Monday around 5:30pm, along a stretch of West Houston Avenue, which lies just outside Montgomery Borough.
Betty Brown is a mother of two who lives in Montgomery. "I'm not surprised, it can happen anywhere, even in rural America," Ms. Brown said. "It's usually pretty safe around here, but you just never know when it could happen, how it could happen. It could be a complete stranger, or it could be somebody you know," she added.
Police say the little girl knew enough not to talk to strangers, and fled when the man tried to convince her to get into his vehicle. After the failed abduction attempt, troopers say the man fled south on Cemetery Hill Road in his pickup truck.
He is described as being around 50 years old, wearing a blue baseball cap, driving a light brown colored pickup truck with a cap over the truck bed. Anyone with information can contact State Police at Montoursville at 368-5700.
Neighbors here say they won't be taking any chances. Brown noted, "Our family, personally, they go nowhere alone. Even if it's down to the corner to the public library, they're either with a friend or with us."
Police are urging all parents to talk to their children about dealing with strangers, and to stress that they should never get into a vehicle with someone they don’t know.
