DALLAS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY -- A fire destroys a mobile home in Country Pine Estates, and the babysitter inside suffers burns on her hand.
Kunkle Fire Chief Jack Dodson believes the fire started around 8 a. m. when the gas stove inside exploded.
"We're still investigating why that exploded," said Dodson.
He credits 14-year-old Meaghan Bidding for getting three-year-old Devonatae Hules, the grandson of homeowner Donnie Hules, out of the home.
"All I saw at first was smoke," said Corey Savage, a friend of Bidding. "Then I got around to the front of it, and I saw flames coming out of the window."
Savage was there when Bidding got out of the mobile home.
"She was trying to see if I could help her, but I didn't have anything to wrap her hand in," said Savage, who had E. M.T. training. "She was bleeding and had burns."
Dodson says Bidding was taken to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital with first and second degree burns on her right arm and hand. She was released a short time later. Friends say she's a cyber school student, which is why she was home during regular school hours.
Both Dodson and a state police fire marshal continue the investigation into why the stove exploded.
