UNIONDALE, SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY -- For many people, MondayŐs holiday meant a day off from school or work. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is traditionally one of the busiest days on the slopes. But not this year.
For many a day off from school means a day on the mountain.
Gwyneth Sharer of West Chester said, ItŐs awesome. ItŐs not busy. ItŐs newly plowed. ItŐs perfect. Nice and powdery."
Elk Mountain in Susquehanna County was packed with people Monday morning but workers say it wasn't as packed as usual.
They blame the weather and rain instead of snow that came Sunday night. Bob DeLuca of Elk Mountain said, ŇIt started out as a real busy weekend but the weather yesterday kinda made things a little bit sloppy, so, its not as busy today as we would have expected it to be if there had been better weather."
The weather didn't stop Jack Lane and his friends from coming up from New Jersey. ŇSome of the mountainŐs a little bit icy -- but most of itŐs pretty good powder -- I think they blew snow last night."
Over the weekend many skiers said they had to wait 10-15 minutes to get on the ski lift. On this holiday, the wait isn't as bad, barely 2-or-3 minutes.
The youngest skier we found was 2-and-a-half year-old Piper. She was learning the ropes with her brothers and mother. Tonia Mayes said, ŇSkiing is such great family time. ItŐs a great family sport. We all enjoy it. It doesn't matter what your age is -- what your ability is -- its fun for everybody."
Fun for everybody, no matter what the weather is. ŇI expected a lot more especially because the local high schools are closed today,Ó added Sharer. | |
