Barack Obama Becomes Nation's 44th President
Barack Obama Becomes Nation's 44th President - Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 5:37PM EST
WASHINGTON, DC- America's 44th President made history Tuesday, becoming the nation's first African-American president.
U. S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office on the steps of the Capitol building. People from all corners of the world packed the National Mall in Washington to witness the historic event.
Shortly after taking the oath President Obama delivered one of the most anticipated speeches of modern times. In his sobering inaugural address, President Obama called for “a new era of responsibility” in America. "Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America, they will be met," he said.
Obama also said we must deal with the deepening economic crisis, two ongoing wars overseas and the global threat of terrorism. He also called for an end to "stale political arguments" and petty partisan bickering.
Before President Obama was sworn in, Scranton native Joe Biden took the Oath
of Office as Vice-President. Justice John Paul Stevens administered the Oath of Office to Vice-President Biden. The Scranton native is now our nation's 47th Vice-President. He previously served 36-years as a U. S. Senator from Delaware.
