STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - Holy handcuffs Batman! It looks like the caped crusader turned into a home invader! A judge allowed Eyewitness News a rare look inside the courtroom during the Dark Knight's trial.
It started with testimony from the alleged victim, The Riddler. He claimed he was relaxing with his girlfriend, Catwoman, when the Dark Knight busted in and beat him up. The Riddler explained, "He broke into our hide out - i mean clubhouse - and beat up cat woman and myself."
Then Catwoman took the stand. She said, "Batman is a fake. Batman is a fraud and he is a liar."
But the Police Commissioner disagreed. He claimed, "They're trying to frame him!"
Batman testified he broke in to prevent a bank robbery the costumed pair was planning. He said, "They had already stolen a bag from the bank."
In the end, The Batman's fate was up to the jury. A jury of fifth graders learning about the legal system. They found him not guilty.
While the characters and the evidence in the trail were just for pretend. The lessons the kids learned were very real. Keith Brooks who played the commissioner said, "Kids get a chance to come in the courtroom to see how the legal system works."
Alison Wasserman who played Catwoman added, "It's also an excuse for lawyers to go to work wearing spandex."
Silly costumes helped teach serious lessons.
The fairytale trial was part of Law Day activities in Monroe County. It was a day to teach children some of the basics of court and the legal system. Judge Maggie Worthington called the event a success. | | |
