Behind The Scenes of The Office: Local Props

Behind The Scenes of The Office: Local Props - Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 10:58PM EST

VAN NUYS, CALIFORNIA --Earlier tonight, you saw the one hundredth episode of The Office here on WBRE. The mockumentary, set in Scranton has developed a huge following in northeastern Pennsylvania. Tonight, reporter Jeff Chirico takes us on the set to show us what you don't see on camera.
When you look closely, the set really looks like any other workplace in northeastern Pennsylvania. The producers have collected all sorts of odds and ends that give Dunder Mifflin a Scranton flair. Dunder Mifflin, this is Jeff! Hey welcome. We are on the set of The Office. Eyewitness News getting a special behind the scenes look at what goes on at Dunder Mifflin."

After having fun on the set, I chat with the crazy cast. Ever wonder what happens with the cameras stop rolling? Actor Rainn Wilson says “I put on my sundress and wig and get on my scooter and go about my business."

Kate Flannery who plays "Meredith Palmer" says "do you guys laugh as much on set as we do at home? Yes we do. We probably laugh more because we think we're funny."

They sure are. Now time to tour the set. “I'm here at Kevin Malone's desk. And there are props all over this office that are true Scranton. Even things you won't see on the show. Old Forge Bank mints. And here's a cd case from Coopers Seafood House." “Our prop guy Phil Shea is so particular about how Scranton is represented and how authentic the newspapers are. The products in vending machines. All that stuff."

From small details -- to the casts' most memorable moments.

Chirico asks Creed Bratton, “has there ever been a scene or episode that made you feel uncomfortable? Bratton replies “there was a scene in the third season. I had to come over and stare at Pam's breasts. She had a sweater on. Ahh. I can't do this. She said, Creed, you have to do it. I said you're like my daughter that was awkward. I actually blushed a couple times and turned red faced.

Some of the funniest moments aren't even scripted. Oscar Nunez, who plays Oscar Martinez, remembers a scene in the third season. "It took me by surprise. I didn't know he was going to do it. We weren't supposed to kiss. We were just supposed to hug. He was like one inch away and I'm like where is he going with this close. And I'm ah. Dear lord. Here we go. And then we're kissing and I hope no one laughs so this is it and we don't have to do a second cause if people laugh, it ruins the take then we have to do it again."

It’s those uncomfortable scenes for the cast and fans that keep them tuning in week after week.
