CARBONDALE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- History was made Wednesday afternoon on top of the Carbondale fire station. The city's first surveillance camera was installed in just a few hours. The cameras themselves are weather-proof and vandal-proof.

Four others will be placed throughout the city in the coming weeks in places like Russel Park and Mill Street. Donna Zaremba, who owns the store Art Strands, thinks the project is a good idea.

The total cost of the 5 cameras is $20,000. Most of that was picked up through a grant. According to Carbondale Police it is a cheap way of fighting crime and keeping people safe.

The City of Carbondale joins Scranton in having surveillance cameras in Lackawanna County. Scranton paid $250,000 to install 10 cameras two years ago.
