PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY- Some call it the Kentucky Derby of harness racing. A big horse is headed our way this weekend, at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. It's called the Delvin Miller Adios race.
This is the 42nd year for the Adios race. It draws some of harness racing's top jockeys and horses. Some racing fans are pumped. Michael Cooper of Bear Creek says, "Oh definitely just for the revenue the areas receiving. I mean its well worth. I mean it's going to help the area out a lot."
Wednesday afternoon, the track picked where each horse would line up for the race. Mohegan Sun Publicity Director John Zimich says, "We're all excited and the racing's just been great. With the casino revenue that's gone into harness racing, it's rejuvenated the sport throughout Pennsylvania."
And for the first time, we'll see the sports best here in northeastern Pennsylvania. The Adios race is usually held at a track in Pittsburgh, but that track is adding on to its casino, kind of like Mohegan Sun just did.
Some who came to Mohegan Sun just to play a few slots were happy to hear about the race. Steve Mallis of Lackawanna County says, "Even though I'm not a racing fan, if it helps the economy and generates interest. This area needs something to pick it up."
On Saturday, horses will pick up the speed, and give fans something to cheer about. The Adios race starts at 5pm Saturday.
One of the horses in this weekend's Adios race set a world record last week. Shadow Play set a record for a 3-year-old pacing colt.
The total purse money for this race is $350,000. | | |
