Biggest Turnout Ever for SSSD Car Show

Biggest Turnout Ever for SSSD Car Show - Sunday, May 3, 2009 at 7:11PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Scranton State School for the Deaf hosted its 7th Annual Car Show Sunday. With the future of the school in doubt, this year's event held even greater significance.
Scranton State School for the Deaf Athletic Director Doug Boersma is enthusiastic about this year's car show. "This is the biggest year we've had, ever," he said.

Biggest as in the crowd. Huge numbers didn't let cloudy and sometimes threatening skies keep them from enjoying the sights of more than 100 classic cars, antique cars and hot rods.

Many people are also on hand to support this school. They've rallied ever since Governor Ed Rendell proposed closing the school for financial reasons.

This crowd adds to a petition list that already tops 52,000 names, including Linda Capalongo. "Everybody's behind the school and people are concerned about these people. This is a good school," she said.

John McClary's 5-year-old grandson, Ashton, attends Scranton State School for the Deaf. He signed the petition and can't believe any elected official would support shutting down the school. "I think it will be a political nightmare if somebody votes to close this school... I think it will haunt them the rest of their lives,” he said.

Ruth Gerrity, the school's Education Association President, delivered petitions to Harrisburg just days ago. She's calling on the community to press lawmakers in Harrisburg to preserve S. S.S. D. "This school is too important to lose and the only way to ensure that there will be a school for the deaf in northeastern Pennsylvania is to maintain the state's commitment to educating deaf kids and not sell it out to a private school for the deaf," she said.

As for the car show itself, all of the money raised today benefits student activities at Scranton State School for the Deaf.
