Attorney John Karoly says his client, David Murphy of Shenandoah, was home recovering from back surgery in March when Shenandoah Police Chief Matthew Nestor and another officer showed up to arrest him without a warrant.
"He says he was punched in his face and thrown in a jail cell and without his heart medication," said Karoly.
Murphy allegedly suffered a heart attack while in the jail cell alone overnight. Murphy claims the next day, Nestor showed up and threatened him as he took him to the hospital.
"According to Murphy, Nestor told him he'd end up like the Mexican who hung himself in the jail cell," added Karoly.
Murphy is also in the minority of Shenandoah -- he's black.
"We're seeking to restore law and order in that community," said Karoly.
Karoly says people gave anonymous tips in both Vega's and Murphy's cases, but says they were afraid to go on the record, fearing police reprisal. He says Tuesday's federal charges against Chief Nestor and three others are just the beginning.
"Others will come forward if they believe Nestor and Gennarini are off the streets," said Karoly. | |
