SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Students at the Charles Sumner Elementary School in Scranton had an unexpected visitor Wednesday morning.

A 200 pound Black bear was spotted wandering near the school when cafeteria and maintenance workers reported for work. Officials at the school called Scranton Police and the State Game Commission.

Principal Dan Williams said the faculty directed children to the back of the school to keep them out of harm's way.

Wildlife Conservation Officer Mark Rutkowski said the bear was in a nearby Maple tree when he arrived on the scene. He used a Scranton Fire Department bucket truck to get close enough to shoot the animal with a tranquilizer dart.

The bear was the same one captured in South Scranton on Labor Day this year. It had been fitted with an ear tag at that time and was released in a wooded area out of the city. Officer Rutkowski said the animal will be taken further away this time. But, he said, it may try to return since it considers the Scranton area part of its 'home range' since it was apparently born somewhere near the city.
