NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY- It was an explosive night in Nanticoke. Hundreds of blasting caps were found inside a home on West Main Street. Homes were evacuated and the bomb squad was called in.
Travelers through Nanticoke Thursday evening found the 200 block of West Main Street shut down, catching area residents off guard.
Susan Ledward said, ÒAll of a sudden there was no noise and we were wonderingÉ Nobody was going too crazy, so we were wondering what was gong on and well, this is what's going on. A little scaryÉÓ
A local landlord discovers over 300 blasting caps - used to detonate dynamite - inside the attic of the home that he was readying for sale. He promptly contacted emergency officials.
Luzerne County EMA Director Stephen Bekanich said, ÒEach of these caps is the equivalent to half a stick of dynamite - so because of the concern we have some on either side of the property that are evacuated and weÕre currently awaiting the arrival of the Scranton bomb squad.Ó
The bomb squad arrived on the scene and removed the blasting caps from the home - and some neighbors tell us - they're not surprised the blasting caps were found there.
Don Sullivan said, ÒThe original owner was a miner -- and a - who knows they used them in the mines for explosions and everything.Ó
Officials say they remove blasting caps from homes in this area on a routine basis - but it was the amount - of over 300 in this incident - that made them use caution - in their removal - and eventually their controlled destruction. | |
