DANVILLE, MONTOUR COUNTY-
Business was booming at a floral shop in Montour County this Valentine’s Day. It’s a far cry, and welcome change, from their experience at the same time last year.
All day long, customers have been popping into Scott's Floral Gifts and Greenhouses on Route 11 in Danville to pick up Valentine's Day flower arrangements.
Co-owner Scott Edwards said, "It has been extremely busy this year. Probably one of the best Valentine's Days we've ever had."
Busy to the tune of a thousand deliveries in the past two days. So many, in fact, that they've stopped accepting delivery orders. Ordinarily, that wouldn't seem unusual for Valentine's Day at a flower shop.
But it's been a one-year, 180-degree turnaround here at Scott's Floral, after last year's Valentine's Day storm collapsed the greenhouse roof, causing plenty of damage, and destroying thousands of flowers.
Edwards said, "We opened up the greenhouse door and there was water squirting everywhere. Here the greenhouse had collapsed right down flat to the ground...Everything for Valentine's Day was moved to the 13th. We just put a little card on everything because we delivered nothing last year on Valentine's Day."
William Rohrbach is a regular customer at Scott’s. "I usually come here to get my flowers for my wife. I really felt bad about it. I know Scott, and you know, you sympathize with them," Rohrbach said.
But the owners decided to rebuild, making the shop even bigger and better than before. All of Scott's customers are happy to see the business doing well this year.
But there were admittedly some tense moments in the wake of the past two day's stormy weather.
"This morning we got up and it was black ice and school delays and we thought, Oh no, not again. But as I said, all the delivery drivers are out and they're working just as hard as they can to get every delivery out today," Edwards noted.
Bill Rohrbach added, "I'm just glad he's here. And I expect to be coming back quite often."
The original location of Scott’s Floral, on Mill Street in Danville, was destroyed by fire in 2003. They’ve been in the flower business now for 34 years.
