Bradford County Christmas stealing spree

Bradford County Christmas stealing spree - Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at 6:26PM EST

Wednesday, Dec 26, 2007 @06:26pm EST

23 year old Anthony Smales from Sayre was arrested Christmas day.

Troopers say he went on a Christmas stealing spree in Bradford County, in and around Sheshequin Township.

Troopers say he stole more than 45 hundred dollars in money, clothes, and unwrapped Christmas presents.

Neighbors there are calling him the Bradford County grinch.

"That's wrong, and i don't think there could be a punishment bad enough for that," says Ryan Barrowcliff.

State police say Smales didn't want to get his Christmas gifts from a store, but from Barrowcliff's home and more.

Smales allegedly stole boots, shoes and soda here, and from neighbors cars money, and cd's.

He even allegedly stole Christmas presents right from under a tree.

Pennsylvania state police Corporal Patrick McConnell says, "individual who was at his residence sleeping, he awoke to find a suspect, as he said, 10 feet from him in his residence, literally stealing christmas presents from under his christmas tree."

Troopers caught the grinch, no, not in Whoville, but near Litchfield.

In his car and house, more than 45 hundred dollars in goods, even some of those presents still wrapped and sealed.

Neighbors can't believe it all happened right after they finished their Christmas meal.

Tim Curry of Sheshequin Township says, "Opportune time for somebody i guess. It's hard to believe anybody would stoop that low."

Troopers recovered many of the stolen goods, much to the delight of Barrowcliff and family.

"i was surprised. I didn't think somebody would come up and steal our stuff and they would catch him," said Barrowcliff.

But Smales, the alleged burglar was caught, and he's in jail.

He has yet to post his 100 thousand dollars bail

State police tell me Smales was likely not stealing on his own, somebody was helping him.

If you think you've had anything stolen, contact the Towanda state police barracks.
