Bradford County Ravaged by Storm

Bradford County Ravaged by Storm - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 5:23PM EST

Reported by: Jeremy Deebel
Wednesday, Jun 11, 2008 @ 05:23pm EST
Canton Township, Bradford County-

Barn roofs dangling out of place and massive tree limbs snapped like twigs- both common scenes here in Lower Bradford County- thanks to raging winds and torrents of rain from yesterday's severe storms.

At Mike and Jean Herman's home just off Route 14, falling tree limbs did some damage, including knocking out this window, but most of the house was spared. "Last night somewhere between 5 and 5:30 something went through. We're not sure what it was. My husband said it was massive rain, wind. We heard people saw funnel clouds, but we're not sure, just a lot of wind and rain," Jean Herman explained.

Mike Herman says he was outside just before the storm hit, and was lucky to make it to safety inside a nearby barn. He noted, "You could hear it coming, but it got here so fast, once it hit, you didn't have time to do anything...You could see maybe just 10 feet in front of you. Just wind and water, really, nothing else."

The Herman's favorite tree was badly damaged and posed a danger to the house, so they set out to chop it down. And they got some unexpected help. Members of their niece's youth group volunteered to join the cleanup effort.

Sandy Kisinger, of Faith Mountain Fellowship, said, "What I'm really proud of is the kids. They're always willing to jump at any chance to help the community in Canton."

The Herman family says they're thankful no one was injured during the storm, and extremely grateful for the outpouring of generosity from the community.

"We had a lot of great help, and it's still going on," Mike said. Jean added, "We're happy we got one cracked window and nobody's hurt, so that's good."

Cleanup is expected to continue at many locations here for some time.

Thankfully, Bradford County Emergency Services personnel say no one was seriously injured in last nights storms.
