Bridge Repair Project to Start Monday - Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 5:10PM EST Reported by: Laurie Monteforte Sunday, Jun 22, 2008 @ 05:10pm EST WILKES-BARRE - Wilkes-Barre is investing about $10 million to repair four flood damaged bridges over the Solomon Creek. Two of the bridges have been fixed. One is almost done. And workers will start to fix the fourth Monday. Neighbors say it's about time. Jane Kwiatkowski enjoys watching the Solomon Creek, when it's calm but she knows that beauty can trun ugly fast. She and her neighbors dealt with a big mess after Hurricane Ivan. Kwiatkowski said, "It is just horrendous. all the mud and everything you have to clean up." And that is just one of the six floods she's survived over the years. "It's a very big inconvenience in your life. It stops everything that you're doing," she said. Soon the people who live and work on Barney Street may have some relief. Officials will start to rebuild the Barney Street Bridge Monday. "I think it's wonderful. It's been a long time coming," said Kwiatkowski. A flood damaged the bridge in 2004. When crews fix it, they will add flood gates. Kwiatkowski said, "I'm thrilled about it that it's going to take place finally and I've waited a long time for this." But not everyone is so excited. Patty Thomas complained, "We get flooded by the sewer systems and the flood gates are not going to help that." She added water always seems to find a way around. Plus, she's worried traffic will back up while the bridge is closed for repairs. She explained, "The surrounding streets, Horton Street, Carey Avenue, it's going to be terrible." Traffic may be terrible for a while but some say as long as the new bridge project keeps the water away, it will be worth the trouble. Crews expect to finish the work sometime next fall. | |
