Bridge To Be Named After Fallen Fire Fighters

Bridge To Be Named After Fallen Fire Fighters - Thursday, March 13, 2008 at 11:40PM EST

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY- The Water Street Bridge will soon become a symbol recalling ultimate sacrifice. Two neighboring communities, separated by a river, have shared 15 years of grief.

"It's long overdue recognition, and we're thrilled that the county commissioners have agreed to rename the bridge," Mayor Bil Goldsworthy, West Pittston, said.

Captain John Lombardo of Pittston and Assistant Foreman Leonard Insalaco of West Pittston died as a team. Mayors Goldsworthy and Joe Keating, Pittston, asked county leaders to name the span in the fire fighters' honor. They believe Insalaco and Lombardo would've changed little about their fate.

"If they could come back, they would tell we would have it no other way. That's what they did," Mayor Keating said.

Insalaco and Lombardo were trapped inside a Main Street business that caught fire March 15, 1993. The floor gave way from under them. Both were killed.

Pittston Assistant Fire Chief Bill Williams remembers the night vividly. "...A tragic loss that we still feel today. On Saturday, it will be a fitting tribute to process down here, give them their due and go on from here."

Mass is scheduled for Saturday, 11:30 a.m., St. John The Evangelist Church.

A ceremony will be held at the foot of the bridge at 1 p.m.
