Bucknell Robotics Demonstration

Bucknell Robotics Demonstration - Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 6:00PM EST

Lewisburg, Union County-
Researchers at Bucknell University gave a glimpse into the future of robotics Thursday afternoon.

Like a scene from a science fiction movie, robots roam around the Project Development Lab at Bucknell.

Mechanical Engineering Professor Keith Buffinton noted, “We’re trying to enhance the capabilities of humans. So we’re creating devices that can move in environments where humans typically move, but maybe there are hazards in that environment.”

And as technology advances, the school’s mechanical engineers can do more and more.

Buffinton explained, “We’d like to take the abilities of the walking, the push recovery, and ultimately get to the point where we can have a running robot. And as we talked about a little bit, we’d like to have the arms and head that allow it to really interact with the environment.”

Researchers from Bucknell showed off the technology for Congressman Chris Carney, who is working to secure more funding for projects like these.

Students here say practice makes perfect as they prepare for the real world.

Senior Jerec Ricci said, “Learning from these people has been an unbelievable experience. Getting to use all the machinery here has also been great. Very challenging, and very useful.”

Junior Lee Markison added, “This has really taught me how to ask for help and look to the right people to find out. Knowing I’m not going to know everything, knowing there’s someone who does.”

Both students and faculty at Bucknell realize the work they do here could save lives in the future.

As these robots become more advanced, they can be sent into scenarios that are dangerous to humans. They’ll be used by groups like our military, police departments, even NASA.

And the students learning here today, are well on their way to becoming the leading mechanical engineers of tomorrow.

Professors from Bucknell teamed with researchers from the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition in Florida on this project.
