var images = new Array(); WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY - Pennsylvania's fiscal budget battle puts child care funding on hold and in jeopardy.

Luzerne County Head Start relies on both state and federal funding for its "Pre-K Counts" and "Head Start" programs.

Families of 132-children enrolled in Luzerne County Head Start were notified last month that their kids can't attend in September because of the budget mess.

Also, 12 staff members were laid off.

Child care leaders say it will only get worse if the eventual final budget includes steep cuts as outlined in Senate Bill 850.

The bill outlines 50% in child care cuts -- or $1 billion less in funding.

Luzerne County Head Start Executive Director Lynn Biga says the furloughed workers and the affected children can be brought back in a day or two if and when a child care friendly state budget is passed.
