Burglar Unknowingly Stays in Luzerne County Attic

Burglar Unknowingly Stays in Luzerne County Attic - Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 08:40AM EST

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY -- We've all heard about unwelcome house guests, but those seven days were too much for Stacey Ferrance.

"He stayed with us basically for a week, you know," said Ferrance. "He ate the same food we ate, he was wearing some of our clothing, which is a little bit disturbing to know he went through our dresser drawer and took some clothes."

It's disturbing, because he wasn't someone she knew. Police say 21-year-old Stanley Carter, who was staying with friends next door, made his way into a shared attic space on December 19th. They didn't have a clue until Christmas. They opened presents, then visited family.

"We came back about two and a half hours later and noticed things missing from the house," she said.

The police came, then Ferrance went to another get-together.

"We left about 6 o'clock and came back around 11:30 on Christmas night and noticed more things missing," Ferrance said.

The police came again. But there was no sign of the intruder until Friday afternoon. Ferrance's dad owns the house and suggested she check the attic crawlspace.

"And when I went up there, I glanced over at the side wall, and there was a perfect footprint at eye level," she said.

As soon as she noticed the footprints, she called Plains Township police. When they arrived, they heard Carter walking around in the attic.

"Once Swoyersville police got here with the dog, he finally came out," she said.

Plains Township police still can't believe what happened.

"It's one of the oddest incidents we've had," said Sgt. Ron Dombroski. "I could write a book and tell everyone about it."

Carter took blankets, a laptop computer, candles -- even Ferrance's toothbrush -- to his makeshift living space in the attic.

"It's absolutely bizarre," she said. "I'm just glad that everybody's safe."

And she's happy to know Carter's extended stay has been moved to the Luzerne County Prison. He faces multiple felony counts of burglary and criminal trespass. He'll be in court on January 5th.
