Busy Berwick Police Department

Busy Berwick Police Department - Friday, November 28, 2008 at 10:00PM EST

Friday, Nov 28, 2008 @ 10:00pm EST

The hectic week of police work in Berwick started on Monday, the 17th -- officers were called to the First Keystone Bank on Freas Avenue after a man showed a gun and got away with cash.

Berwick, Luzerne County -

Chief Frank Brennan, of the Berwick police says, “Of course, we started to run that real hard and the officers were running leads down.”

Five days later -- an abandoned baby was found outside a Garfield Avenue home in freezing temperatures.

Chief Brennan continues, “We switched tracks and jumped on that real hard too and every officer was on that. And while we were doing that, there was the armed robbery at Weis Markets.”

This happened exactly one week after the bank robbery. Around eleven a-m this past Monday, a woman was loading groceries in her car, when a man showed her a gun and demanded her purse.

While it sounds like crime is running rampant in Berwick, Chief Brennan says that's not the case. He states, “The officers have been aggressive, so the number of our major incidents have actually declined.”

While Chief Brennan says his officers have been putting in 16 hour days this week, he says someone else deserves the credit.

Chief Brennan continues, “The unsung hero here is the public. Citizens have come forth in all three major incidents, coming forth with any and all information they had.”

He says he's giving his officers a bit of a break this holiday weekend. He adds, “I'm proud they stayed focused and did quality work and have one case finishing up, and I think we're getting really close to the other two.”

After all this chaos, the chief hopes for some down time to catch up. Chief Brennan concludes, “I guess at some point the pressure release valve goes off and you get hit, so this was our turn in the barrel.”

Anyone with information regarding the armed robberies are asked to call police immediately.
