Natural disasters and major emergencies can sometimes delay even the best professional responders. In the meantime, CERT or Community Emergency Response Team training, can provide life-saving assistance.
Funded through the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, CERT training promotes partnership between emergency services personnel and the people they serve.
Lycoming County Director of Public Safety Gary Hutchinson said, "These are basically neighbors helping neighbors. They're trained in the basics that they could render care initially."
That care includes fire suppression and safety, search and rescue tactics, basic medical assistance, and more. In the event that first responders become overwhelmed with calls during an emergency, the purpose of CERT training is to allow ordinary citizens to save and sustain lives until professional help arrives.
"It's a 20-hour course. And they receive certification in this, and also materials that they can keep at their house to respond in these types of situations," Hutchinson added.
Kelle Robinson, of the Citizens Corps Council said, "Primarily, the kit is made up of a lot of bandaging items, as well as ice packs. Then there's some stuff for your basic survival. We have drinking water and some food, flashlights, gloves, everything somebody would need to be able to perform those tasks."
There's also information on how to prepare your own home for any emergency.
Robinson said, "We have a guide where people can create their own supply kits at home, should they be stuck in their home, for up to 72 hours. What they need to have on hand to survive until help can reach them."
Lycoming County residents interested in learning more about CERT training are encouraged to contact the county Department of Public Safety or the Williamsport Bureau of Fire. About one hundred fifty Lycoming County area residents have completed the community emergency response team training in the past two years.
