Campaigners Going Door-to-Door in NEPA

Campaigners Going Door-to-Door in NEPA - Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 6:53PM EST

OLD FORGE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- You'll find talk about the upcoming Presidential election just about everywhere you turn. Saturday, some found the issue right on their doorstep.

Lois Grippo and Ellen Gelb have been friends since college. They've shared a lot, but stumping for votes is a first. The two got up around 4:30 A. M. and spent $75 to drive from New York to Scranton.

Grippo said, "My first election was for JFK and this makes me feel the way I felt when I was voting for John Kennedy when I was 21-years-old."

Gelb added, "I'm really motivated by this election and feel this is really transformational."

They spent the day canvassing an Old Forge neighborhood on behalf of the Democratic ticket, hoping to get people on board or merely make sure they're registered to vote.

Neighborhoods like this one in Old Forge are one of the dozens in Lackawanna County canvassed Saturday and in the following days by the Obama/Biden campaign, and we're told by the campaign that the footprints across the state are growing each day.

More than 200 people filled the Obama/Biden headquarters in Biden's native city Saturday. Jason Rosenberg drove all the way from Rochester, New York. "One of the members of the Democratic Club sponsored a trip for a group of us, 8 total," he said.

Volunteers were trained on campaign facts, how to relate to voters, and got street placements at so-called "pursuable" homes in Lackawanna County. Peggy Cosimano says she can't walk the walk, but can talk the talk. "What I've come to do is make calls and ask the same kinds of questions they'll be asking door to door," she told Eyewitness News.

The Obama campaign has similar days like this planned throughout the battleground state as the election nears. A similar effort also took place in Wilkes-Barre Saturday.

The campaign push is up against a deadline. Monday is the last day to register to vote in PA.
