LUZERNE COUNTY -- Many call Labor Day the last hurrah of summer. This summer hasn't been too kind to campers. Rain washed out much of the early part of summer.

We talked with campers getting in their last trip of the season at Frances Slocum State Park. It was a gloomy, overcast day at the park.

Bill Curry of Wilkes-Barre says the weather is almost fitting for the unofficial end to summer. "Started out a little rainy here and there but as the summer went through we had some nice hot weekends," said Curry.

Those nice hot weekends are what Curry's family lives for. To them, Labor Day signals the end of camping season. "The last ho-ha of the summer. I'm already waiting for next Memorial Day after today," said Dianne Curry.

Larry Schultz of Wilkes-Barre is looking forward to next summer as well. He says this summer has been a washout. Schultz said, "We've been over here about five or six times this year I think this is the first time we haven't had rain, at least some kind of rain."

Frances Slocum officials say it's been busy all summer despite the rain. It's even busy on Labor Day despite the gloomy forecast.

Labor Day weekend has been for the most part sunny. "This has been a perfect weekend as far as camping goes," said Bill Kunkle of Franklin Township.

A summer's worth of rainy camping trips hasn't bothered him. "For me, camping in cooler weather is better, okay? Less bugs, it's a little more comfortable," said Kunkle.
