SUGARLOAF TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY- Dozens of teens from the Poconos are spending the week at Penn State Hazleton as part of Camp Cadet. It's a state police program geared towards kids with an interest in law enforcement.

At times it was hard to tell who was more excited, the kids or the dogs. Lt. Joe Petrovich with the Luzerne County Correctional Facility said, "It's great, we have a lot of fun. We like coming out with the kids and putting on these programs."

Officers from the Luzerne County jail and their K-9's showed off their stuff for cadets. And while the dogs may look or sound vicious, they're actually excited to be here. "As you can see the dogs love it too. They love getting outside and doing this. It's just a lot of fun. They have fun, we have fun. We just enjoy it and the kids like it too," said Petrovich.

They demonstrated things like simple obedience, drug searches and running down a suspect. It's all part of the constant training each dog receives starting on their first birthday. "Every day is training. Every time we're doing something with them, like you saw with the obedience work, the drug work, and we do a lot of training on our own too so we're training all the time actually," Petrovich explained.

And the dogs aren't the only ones learning. That's what the kids are here for too. Trooper Rob Ruckle with PSP Hazleton said, "We have different agencies that come in like the Game Commission, forensic services, things of that nature. Basically agencies that the state police and local police deal with on a routine basis."

The kids will get to try their hand at scuba diving on Wednesday. That's when the Luzerne County dive team stops in. The camp runs through Friday.
